Taught by: Rab Cherry
In just 15 weeks you will make your own fully functional fiddle. Box fiddles were commonly made in Ireland in times past, as well as in the folk traditions of the U.S.A where they’re referred to as cigar box fiddles. Indeed, they’ve been made all over the world, generally in situations where improvising was called for. And although this has mostly been in folk traditions, the box fiddle has much in common with the medieval fiddle. It has all the main components of a standard violin, including internal blocks, linings, bass bar, sound post, scroll, etc. And while you are in the process of making your fiddle, you will develop skills in using planes and saws, as well as measuring, gluing, preparing the surfaces for varnishing, and varnishing with a brush.
